Medha Parlikar on the Casper v1.5 Upgrade

Medha Parlikar, offering insights into the 1.5 release, was undoubtedly the star of the show. She shed light on the successful deployment of the latest and most significant update to the Casper mainnet. This update marked the 17th release since the mainnet's launch in March 2021. Here are some of the key improvements v1.5 introduced, which Medha highlighted during the community call:

  • Fast Sync Nodes: Nodes can now join the network much faster without replaying the entire state from the beginning. This means a lighter footprint, with nodes requiring less than 500GB of hard disk, promoting decentralization and a healthier network. New

  • Speculative Execution Endpoint: A groundbreaking feature for developers, this endpoint allows the testing of transactions against the mainnet. This is crucial for estimating gas fees and ensuring smooth, predictable transaction execution, but this feature offers much more than that. Developers can now test and debug smart contracts against the live network using real production data. This feature is unique to Casper and addresses a significant need for businesses and independent developers alike, allowing them to debug contracts without committing the changes to the blockchain.

  • Multisig and Role-Based Security Enablement: A freshly introduced feature allows smart contracts to identify the keys that authorized a transaction. Coupled with weighted keys and action thresholds, developers are granted an enhanced security layer, granting visibility into historical transaction signatories. These account hashes can be employed to set varied account abilities.

  • Redelegate without Unbonding: Users can now choose a new validator while switching their staked tokens. The transition occurs during the seven-era unbonding period (typically 14-16 hours), eliminating the need for manual undelegation and redelegation of tokens.

Please note that there is more to v1.5 than what is mentioned here. You can learn more about the changes brought by Casper v1.5 here.

Developers are encouraged to check out our GitHub announcement for a more technical overview.

“With the 1.5 release behind us, the Casper team has an eye on the future, planning to shorten block times to 16 seconds and make network operations even more efficient,” concluded Mehda.

Ralf Kubli on Casper Association's Vision

Ralf Kubli,  Board Member of the Casper Association, brought forward his perspectives on the direction the Association is taking.

  • Developer Empowerment: Ralf expressed excitement and optimism over the recent 1.5 release, with particular attention drawn to the Association's emphasis on developer empowerment. With the launch of a dedicated Developer Portal, Casper Association hopes to be the bridge that links developers with the resources they need.

  • Developer Incentives: Ralf touched upon the newly introduced incentives for developers, such as DevRewards, a reward program encouraging developers to bring forward innovative ideas and solve existing challenges to contribute to the Casper ecosystem. These rewards are set in place to not just reward contributions but also foster innovation and engagement within the Casper community.

  • Focus on Asia: Focusing on the Association's global strategy, Ralf shared insights about the upcoming Token2049 event planned in Asia. This event promises to be of significant importance, amplifying the Casper Association's footprint in the region.

Ecosystem Updates from Michael Steuer

Michael Steuer, leading as the CEO of MAKE, delved deep into the important updates releted to the Casper ecosystem.

  • CSPR.live Integration: Steuer proudly emphasized the harmonious integration of Casper 1.5 features into CSPR.live. This means more functionality and enhanced user experience, notably in the redelegation of stakes.

  • Casper Wallet Enhancements: The Casper Wallet has undergone significant upgrades. It now comes enriched with native ERC20 and NFT functionalities. Furthermore, the integration with the Uphold’s fiat on-ramp, Topper, has been implemented, facilitating user-friendly top-ups and more.

  • CSPR.click: Steuer also introduced the community to CSPR.click, which is being dubbed as the "one SDK to rule them all." This tool is not just another addition to the ecosystem. Instead, it's a revolutionary toolset aiming to ease and simplify Dapp development on the Casper Network.
