Casper Wallet

We recently conducted a poll to learn about what our community is most interested in hearing from us, and the resounding winner was the Casper Wallet. So, by popular demand, here is everything you need to know about Casper Wallet!

Casper Wallet: Open beta

Michael Steuer, the CTO of MAKE, provided a comprehensive explanation of Casper Wallet and answered the questions from our community.

“As many of you know, we concluded a smaller private beta, which went well. We got some really good feedback from our developer community. This was in parallel to us wrapping up the Halborn security audit. There were some recommendations that we remediated. The report will be published soon.” said Michael.

The Casper Wallet open beta is set to begin on March 15 and will run for two weeks. That means you have a chance to be one of the first users to experience the new Casper Wallet! We invite everybody to join the open beta by visiting casperwallet.io and signing up.

Michael also announced that a commemorative NFT will be issued for beta participants. Stay tuned for more information.

Casper Wallet: Improvements

As the successor to Casper Signer, Casper Wallet will offer all the features of its predecessor while also introducing several improvements, including a better user interface, enhanced user experience, complete desktop browser support, future mobile compatibility, and more.

“We put a lot of effort into intuitive design. We believe that for any blockchain product to be really adopted, it needs to be intuitive and self-explanatory. In other words, my mother needs to be able to use it.” said Michael, underlying the importance of a user-friendly design.

“Uncompromising security, industry standard recovery phrases have been implemented to Casper Wallet. The derivation algorithm we used is compatible with Ledger, so, you have a Ledger, you can use the same 24 words on Ledger and vise versa,” he added.

Most wallet extensions focus on Chromium-based browsers despite the fact that many developers use Mac. Casper Wallet will come with Safari support. This is especially important for enterprise-level because their employees do not usually have the liberty to use the browser of their choice.

Casper Wallet will offer a native notification delivery feature, which will greatly enhance the user experience. This feature will be available to dApps that have integrated with Casper Wallet, bringing users a level of convenience and familiarity typically associated with Web2 applications.

Direct Ledger integration is also on the roadmap, allowing users to connect their Ledger with the Casper Wallet without the need for the secret recovery phrase.

Casper Wallet will bring numerous other improvements over the legacy Casper Signer. You can listen to the recording of this Twitter Space to learn more.

Casper Wallet: Q&A

Q: Will anyone who participates in the open beta receive the commemorative NFT?

A: There will be certain participation requirements, including specific steps that need to be followed. This is to ensure that as many people as possible try out certain functionality of the wallet. At the end of the process, there will be a registration step where you will need to share your public key with us so that we can verify that you completed those functions. Once you've done that, you'll be eligible to receive the commemorative NFT.

Q: Will Casper Signer still be usable after the launch of Casper Wallet?

A: Yes, Casper Signer is placed in a “maintenance mode” months ago, which means we essentially stopped developing new features for it. The only thing we have been doing since is fixing major bugs. We will continue this for a while and at some point in the future, we will encourage Casper Signer users to switch over to the Casper Wallet by providing instructions within the Casper Signer.

We will never completely disable it since there will always be people that will have their keys in the Signer. We will rather put it into hibernation mode so that users can always export their keys and move them over to the Casper Wallet.

Q: If someone is cryogenically frozen and then awakens 30 years later, can they still retrieve their keys from the Casper Signer?

A: Yes. Anytime they want.

Q: Will users ever have the ability to purchase CSPR with fiat currency?

A: Yes. We are already working with fiat on-ramps- third-party service providers that allow individuals to purchase cryptocurrency using traditional fiat currencies, to make this possible in the future.

Q: Will the Casper Wallet be definitely KYC-free?

A: Yes. It is a self-custodial wallet and we will not know anything about the individual user interacting with it. However, when the ability to purchase CSPR with fiat money becomes available, there might be KYC requirements since that ability will be provided by a third party. But it is an optional action, so Casper Wallet will be self-custodial and KYC-free.

Q: I have some CSPR on cspr.live. Will I have to undelegated them and move them over to Casper Wallet or will they be accessible as soon as I start using Casper Wallet?

A: If you have some CSPR on cspr.live and want to access them using Casper Wallet, you don't need to undelegate them. Casper Wallet works differently from Casper Signer when it comes to private keys. When you first set up your Casper Wallet, you'll set it up with a secret recovery phrase. You can then use this recovery phrase to generate as many private keys as you need.

If you previously staked using the Casper Signer, you can still access your tokens on Casper Wallet by importing the secret key stored on your computer or elsewhere into your Casper Wallet. This means you can easily transition from using the Casper Signer to Casper Wallet, without having to undelegate or move your tokens.

That’s all for this month’s Casper Twitter Space! Be sure to join the next call in April and don’t forget to join us in the developer community call on Discord if you fancy some technical discussions about Casper.

We also invite you to listen to our new Casper podcast series, featuring stories from people making a real-world impact within the decentralized web.
