Update on Circulating Supply

Effective today, the Casper Association will update the methodology for reporting CSPR’s circulating supply. Previously, a token had only been counted in circulating supply once it had been transferred from its genesis or originating wallet. Going forward, Casper will reflect in its circulating supply reporting all tokens that are unlocked and transferrable.

Update on Circulating Supply

This means that all CoinList sale tokens, unlocked private validator sale tokens, tokens used for developer & ecosystem incentives, and unlocked tokens held by CasperLabs and the Casper Association will be included in the reporting circulating supply. As a result, the total number of reported circulating tokens will be approximately 10.4B CSPR. Of these, almost 8.3B tokens (or 80% of CSPR’s circulating supply) are currently staked and bonded to the network. Live statistics can be found on cspr.live.This update to reporting methodology will NOT increase, or in any other way impact, the total supply of tokens in the Casper ecosystem. These tokens have already been transferable, and there are no net new coins being added to the supply.

Background

On March 31, 2021, the genesis block of Casper validators launched the Casper mainnet. Over the past 18 months, we have seen tremendous growth of the network, including, as of today, 85,000+ Casper accounts, 18,400+ delegators, 200+ connected nodes, and 540,000+ native token transfers. Currently, approximately 74% of all CSPR tokens are staked and bonded to the network, providing notable security to the platform. Casper’s Telegram channels (including the Casper main channel & various geographic/language channels) include more than 100,000 members. There are more than 188,000 followers across the Twitter channels of CasperLabs & Casper Network, and there are over 31,500 members in Casper’s  Discord channel. What’s more, native Web3 projects and innovative enterprise businesses of all sizes are adopting Casper as their layer 1 chain of choice at an ever increasing pace.

Casper experienced several major milestones during the Summer of 2022. On August 5th, we celebrated the creation of the one millionth block on the network. August 28th was also notable, as it marked the final vesting and release of tokens from the public token sale on CoinList. We have also seen vibrant activity in the Casper ecosystem over the past weeks and months, much of which you can learn about on our blog.

More Details About the Update

From Casper’s main network launch until now, a token had only been counted in circulating supply once it had been transferred from its genesis wallet. This led to some curious effects; for instance, more tokens being staked to the network than reported as circulating. This continues to cause confusion for the Casper community and the wider crypto communities.

With all CoinList sale tokens now distributed and most CSPR tokens unlocked, the Casper Association has examined the methodology by which circulating supply is reported. Starting today and going forward, Casper will reflect in its circulating supply reporting all tokens that are unlocked and transferable.

It is worth noting that Casper is not the first layer one blockchain to update its circulating supply methodology. In fact, several have made the change in reporting. For example, see here and he

What is Circulating and What Isn’t

With this update, the following tokens will now be reported as part of circulating supply:

  • All CoinList and validator sale tokens, since these tokens are unrestricted;
  • Tokens that are reserved for developer and ecosystem incentives, since they too are unlocked and used for grants and developer initiatives; and
  • Tokens originally allocated to and held by the Casper Association, since these tokens are unlocked and reserved for community development; and
  • Tokens originally allocated to and held by CasperLabs, since these tokens are unlocked.

The remaining tokens that aren’t included in circulating supply are comprised of the Casper Association’s and CasperLabs’ unvested team tokens and future team members’ and advisors’ tokens.

Results

The notable result of this update to the reporting methodology will be that the total number of tokens circulating will be approximately 10.4B CSPR; of these, 8.3B tokens (or 80% of CSPR’s circulating supply and 74% of CSPR’s total supply) are currently staked and bonded to the network. It is important to note that this update will NOT increase, or in any other way affect, the total supply of tokens in the Casper ecosystem. There are no net new coins being added to supply.

The tokens which will now be reported as part of circulating supply have already been unlocked and transferable. This update simply puts Casper more in line with the way in which most other leading blockchains report circulating supply.
